SR99 Tunnel (Alaskan Way Viaduct Replacement Tunnel)

Location: Seattle, WA

The Alaskan Way Viaduct (SR99) is a double-decked elevated freeway located in downtown Seattle.  In 2001, an earthquake damaged the viaduct and its supporting seawall which required the state to invest in emergency repairs.  Boring a new tunnel began in 2013 and was completed in 2017.  Detec Systems performed IntegriScan testing of the cold fluid applied on horizontals and verticals throughout construction.  A total of 29 breaches were found, repaired and passed re-testing.  The tunnel opened to traffic in 2019.
